10:00pmA Safer Sex Trade  ( 2006, 48', HD (1.78), colour, stereo, Canada ) - a smash-hit!!! (received record-ratings & repeated-broadcasts on CBC Newsworld)

Writer/Producer/Directer: Carolyn Allain; Writer/Producer: Dave Ray; (Produced by Cheap and Dirty Productions, in association with CBC Newsworld).

SUBJECTS: Madam Scarlett Lake; Jennifer Allan; Simone; Derek; Linda; Robert Pickton court-trial.

A Safer Sex Trade (2006) - Madam Scarlett LakeA Safer Sex Trade (2006) - Derek, Lake, Simone.A Safer Sex Trade (2006) - Jennifer & LindaA Safer Sex Trade (2006) - Jennifer Allen.

A documentary that explores the stigma of prostitution: Jennifer returns to the streets she used to walk to meet basic survival needs; Simone, the independent escort, offers "girlfriend experiences" to business executives; and Madam Scarlett opens up the doors to her boutique styled brothel. They share their experiences while working in the City of Vancouver, where Robert Pickton stands trial for the alleged murder of 26 women, most of whom were working in the sex trade.

A Safer Sex Trade is an original concept created by Carolyn Allain and co-written with David Ray, produced by their independent film company Cheap and Dirty Productions. Allain’s directorial debut offers insight into the complex issue of the sex trade by examining the lives of three women with entirely unique experiences as prostitutes. Scarlett Lake is a highly successful madam with thirty years in the business who opens up the doors to her bawdy house. Jennifer Allan is a former drug addicted “survival” sex trade worker, who works tirelessly to rescue prostitutes still out on the streets. Simone is an independent escort who has worked her way up from the street and presently offers “girlfriend experiences” to her clients.

Fetching Cody (2006)Fetching Cody (2006)Fetching Cody (2006)

Over the last few years, Jay Baruchel lit up the screen as “Danger” in Million Dollar Baby and the scene-stealing Zeppelin fan in Almost Famous. Now, Baruchel realizes his romantic lead potential as the star of David Ray’s imaginative love story Fetching Cody.

Set in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside, Baruchel plays Art Frankel, a hustler and general lay-about, who is head over heels in love with the luminous Cody Wesson (Sarah Lind). When she falls into a coma from an apparent overdose, it is up to Art to seek out the one person who offers him any kind of hope: his homeless friend Harvey – and the time machine he found in a dumpster. Desperate to reach her, Art suspends disbelief and embarks on a quest through time and space deep into Cody’s past. After several humiliating attempts to figure out where things went wrong, it slowly begins to dawn on him that the real problem in her life might just be him. What ensues are a series of increasingly reckless attempts to avoid the one thing he fears most – sacrificing his profound love for Cody in exchange for her life. A startling debut by first-time director Ray, Fetching Cody is sure to rouse the most cynical heart with this wildly original tale about redemption and the lengths a most unlikely hero will go for love.

David Ray filming Fetching Cody (2006)David Ray combines an original voice with a strong sense of craft developed working in the film and television industries of Vancouver, Toronto and New York. His feature directorial debut Fetching Cody (starring Jay Baruchel) premiered at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. In addition to writing his own screenplays, he enjoys collaborating with other writers and directors. His extensive formal training includes Ryerson Polytechnical University’s Film Studies Program and The National Screen Institute’s “Features First” Program. David’s roster of short films and music videos include How To be A Big Time Dancer, Video Graffiti and Bravo! audience favorite Gray Matter. David has ventured outside the film industry as well, working as a steel worker, a house cleaner and a salmon smoker. Now a founding partner of Cheap and Dirty Productions Inc., Ray has several projects in development, including Long Harbor, a supernatural thriller, and The Privateer, an offbeat and romantic pirate story. (Y'arrr!!!) Born in Montreal, he now calls Vancouver home.

With an interest in both film and television, Carolyn Allain has brought her unique voice and expansive production experience to immensely popular and critically acclaimed projects in both Canada and the USA. After graduating from the University of Ottawa with a bilingual degree in Communications and Political science in 1996, Carolyn has gone on to write, produce and direct for LIFE, Discovery, CBC, RDS, The learning Channel and PAX. She has brought her grass roots marketing and distribution experience to such feature films as Go Further (Woody Harrelson), and Fix: Story of an Addicted City, a case study in self-distribution. Carolyn handled booking and promoting the latter movie in forty cities across Canada before it would go on to win Best Documentary at the Genie Awards in 2003.

At the same time she actively develops her own projects, including the Bravo! Channel audience favorite Gray Matter and the feature length dark comedy Fetching Cody, with partners that include Telefilm Canada, Showcase and Movie Central. In development for several years, Fetching Cody has had the support of  The National Screen Institute “Features First” Program, Telefilm, The Harold Greenberg FUND and The Praxis Centre for Screenwriters. Shortly after that wraps in the fall of 2005, she will be directing her own documentary entitled A Safer Sex Trade, a critical examination of the status quo of prostitution today being developed with CBC Rough Cuts. She most recently completed directing the French version of Bell Making the Cut, one of the largest productions on the CBC and RDS slate. Responsible for the French content, Carolyn is inspired by the high level of talent, both on the ice and behind the camera, although she confides that her days of daydreaming about playing in the NHL are behind her. (Ahhh!!!)

The National Screen Institute's “Features First” Program.
